Thomas Aabling
Environmental Engineer
Copenhagen, Denmark
Thomas Aabling is an environmental engineer from Denmark and the founder of Thomas Aabling Vandmiljø ApS (TAV), an environmental consultancy founded by Thomas in 1999. Prior to starting TAV, Thomas worked for four years as a designer of computer models for the aquatic environment at the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI), and as a project manager in a large environmental consulting company.
Thomas has a Master’s Degree in environmental engineering and lake restoration from the Danish Technical University and the Aquatic Biology Department at the University of Copenhagen.
He has a strong theoretical background in sediment and environmental chemistry, which he uses to solve problems in lakes, groundwater systems and marine systems. He held a teaching position in Environmental Chemistry at the Technical University of Denmark and University of Copenhagen for many years, and has accumulated broad experience from his work with many institutions in conveying complicated information in an easy-to-understand way to many different groups.
Through his private consultancy, Thomas has undertaken many technical assignments both in Denmark and overseas in different areas for municipalities, utility companies and government agencies. He is often called upon to analyse problems, where no solution seems straight forward.
Despite his wide-ranging experience, Thomas’ heart lies in lakes and he is regularly asked to troubleshoot problems and solve related peripheral issues, including holding workshops for citizen groups, assisting authorities, NGO’s and other stakeholders in their decision making. When needed, he also designs new measuring and application systems . For example, he has designed an innovative barge-boat system for the easy application of P-sediment binders in both powder and liquid form. The application boat features a unique computer system that keeps track of the dosing, second-by-second, square meter by square meter of the lake area. The dosing boat and system can easily be handled by one person and has been successfully used in multiple lake treatments, including dosing up to 4.300 tons of aluminium chloride in a single project.
